Goedert like the rest of the Eagles offense has been up and down but with rookie QB Jalen Hurts finally being ushered in as the starter expect the young QB to look for Goedert as a safety blanket when things are not going his way. The Philadelphia Eagles have been active in the trade market under general manager Howie Roseman. Hes matched up against Rasul Douglas 1-on-1 at the top of the screen. Being able to abuse coverage with slants and out routes over and over is more valuable than a receiver that can occasionally win deep downfield. [7:06] Very clever play design by Doug Pederson. DeVonta Smith is an instant star for the Eagles and a true No. But the NFC North has four of the very best wideouts in football, including possibly the best wideout in the league in Adams. Although its an offense that deflates WR stats by distributing the ball a lot, its a cleverly designed offense that gets WRs open. Taking a closer look at his peers we can see Jalen Reagor the Philadelphia Eagle's 21st overall pick in the previous draft is experiencing regular rookie growing pains. #NFL pic.twitter.com/Nuw7mbf7gC. Although he suffered from poor QB play in 2019 (40.2% of passes thrown his way were uncatchable, 3rd worst in this years draft class), he also had a terrible 9.8% drop rate, one of the highest in this years draft class. Corey Coleman, Cody Lattimer and Russell Shepard all have a chance to make an impact, though 5th round draft pick Darius Slayton will possibly keep one of them off the roster this season. Goedert has a high catch percentage showing he is performing well as the teams safety blanket. It could happen, but it requires a lot of things to go right for Washington that didnt go right in 2018. NFC North. The Eagles belong at the bottom of this list but that doesnt mean there isnt potential. He primarily uses a combination of route running, short-area quickness, and savvy (with fakes/misdirection and ability to find the soft spot in zones) to get open and make plays. The more I learn about certain recent Eagles draft picks, the more it seems like they are perfect long-term replacements for some of the star players on the Eagles roster. He still doesnt have the short-area-quickness or suddenness to juke DBs out of their shoes, but he showed better ability to get open in tight spaces using fakes and body positioning. He takes off and blows past his DB to get about 6 yards of separation vertically. Second, this is clearly a play designed to get the ball to Alshon Jeffery in the red zone. His time with the Raiders was productive, but wildly inconsistent. Ceedee Lamb is the best performing rookie by some distance. He has surprising physicality for his size, often fighting through contact on a contested catch to get extra yards. Despite being one of just four players at the position with a $100 million tag, Brown is just fifth on the list of highest-paid wide receivers. However, he also ended this play with a mistake I saw him make a few other times too by slipping and falling without contact. JJ is excellent at using his strength, big body, and smart positioning to block out CBs and make catches in contested spaces like this. This year, were going to look at the division again, but were gonna try to ramp things up a bit by adding some film review to some of the position group reviews. He discussed areas where this year's draft class looks strong . And Lamb came out of the gate with a 74-catch rookie season. At the bottom of the depth chart, Watkins, Hightower and J.J. Arcega-Whitesid might be in a battle. Hogs Haven looks at all four teams in the division in an effort to identify the best and the weakest of the NFC East. The team is left with newly-signed the veteran free agent, 30-year-old Golden Tate (who, for the record, I wanted the Redskins to sign in free agency this year) as the apparent top receiver on the roster. Lastly, no discussion of Terry McLaurin is complete without discussing his blocking and special teams value. This play highlights Coopers ability to make tough catches, as well as the awareness and body control to keep both feet in bounds for the reception. I thought he wasnt as shifty as one might expect for a player so fast, he was a body-catcher rather than a hands-catcher, and he relied too much on out-athleting his opponents using speed or physicality to get open, which wouldnt necessarily work at the next level. Undersized at 510 and 199 lbs, Tate doesnt quite have the measurables of a WR1, but excels as a WR2. Hes still only an average run blocker, but thats a step up from what he was and traditionally means a lot to the Cowboys offense. Whenever defenses left him 1-on-1 against non-elite CBs, he was able to get open for a big play, though he was often missed by inaccurate Redskins QBs early in the season. His only real weakness to me is that he depends on physicality to get open quickly, as he lacks the short area quickness to get open purely based on acceleration. However, he has a limited route tree and doesnt show much subtlety in terms of using fakes, counters, leverage, body-positioning, or physicality to get open. Slay is in position to easily break the pass up instead. With Amari Cooper off to Cleveland, and James Washington and Michael Gallup dealing with injuries this season, the window has been there for Lamb to step up, and hes done so with flying colors to help Dallas to its 10-3 start. In the off-season, Washington went out and signed speed-threat Curtis Samuel to a three-year, 34,500,000 contract. He even manages to keep his feet in bounds when he lands despite a shove by Darby, showing excellent body control and awareness. If you look at all the players at this position that have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you might be shocked that a good percentage of them are not elite speedsters. He is a nuanced route runner, so he excels at running his routes in such a way that he has leverage over DBs and can get quick separation after his break. The Packers' offense has faltered for most of the season without Adams to create explosive plays. Former Jacksonville Jaguar Allen Hurns, who hasnt been able to break 500 yards in a season since 2015, when he put up 1,031 yards and 10 TDs, is probably the headliner of the bottom half of the depth chart. Hogs Haven looks at all four teams in the division in an effort to identify the best and the weakest of the NFC East. Jeffery rewarded Cutlers trust with two 1000-yard seasons in his first 3 years in the NFL, though he hasnt been able to replicate that production since, due to repeated nagging injuries he seems to suffer every year. However, note that this play seems designed explicitly to get the ball to Cooper. Once Tate has the ball in space, he is truly hard to bring down. [3:34] Reagor again goes deep, this time going inside (maintaining early inside leverage against the boundary CB), then outside a little later (maintaining outside leverage against the deep safety). Alshon Jeffery doesnt have elite quickness, but uses his physicality to get open on short routes like this instead of relying on quickness and change-of-direction ability. This play shows good awareness by Richardson to read the defense and split the defenders, as well good speed (notice how quickly he runs by them) and good ability to locate the ball and adjust to it. Fulgham is a huge question mark but we know hes talented. However, his best athletic trait isnt his deep speed so much as his short-area quickness. The score is calculated by scaling each metric to a percentile (from 0 to 100) relative to all wide receivers who have played at least 150 offensive snaps through Week 14 of the 2022 season. Here, the CB decides to take the flag on pass interference rather than risk Jeffery getting loose behind the secondary. Instead, they show the attributes listed below. 1. NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah joined Chris Brown and Steve Tasker on One Bills Live from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Call 1-800-GAMBLER. Darby is a much better (and faster) CB than Douglas and runs with McLaurin down the sideline, but Terry turns back at just the right time, quickly locates the ball in the air, tracks it, and reaches out to make a very tough contested catch. This play shows Slaytons deep speed, ball tracking ability, and ability to haul in long passes. Once Reagor has passed the CB he shows great acceleration getting down the field quickly and showing good use of inside leverage, keeping himself between the CB and the QB so the QB has a clear path to throw to him inside. Derek Barnett has a very similar skillset to Brandon Graham. At the quarter mark of the 2022 NFL season, the Next Gen Stats analytics team ranks the top 10 defensive lines. Odds & lines subject to change. This play highlights Richardsons deep threat ability, change-of-direction, ball tracking, body positioning, leaping ability, and strong hands at the catch point. Basically everything about this matchup is tilted in McLaurins favor, and I think its the type of matchup he isnt likely to receive now that teams have had a look at him. Complimenting his speed, Reagor shows good ball-tracking ability and ability to adjust to the ball once its in the air. The NFC East has three new head coaches and a young group of quarterbacks; its probably no surprise that it has more young and promising receivers than older established veteran receivers. It's really impressive. Jeffery plays with more speed than JJ, but JJ plays with more strength and has less of an injury history. Will Jaguars prevail over Cowboys. They bring two DBs down to bracket Slayton (bottom of screen). Slayton has all the athletic traits of a very good WR, but needs a lot of refinement added to his game to allow him to win when athleticism isnt enough. [7:19] Slayton lines up on the boundary top of screen opposite Stephon Gilmore. I also think hes not especially physical and will have trouble against press coverage. Once hes free, nobody in the secondary can catch him. NFC East. The Cowboys are 6-1 with an NFL-leading average of 35.7 points per game since Dak Prescott returned from injury in Week 7. NFL footage NFL Productions LLC. [5:16] Cooper lines up outside and fakes a break outside, causing Jalen Mills to bite hard on the fake, and leaving Cooper wide open when he redirects inside. This play showcases McLaurins sense of timing (looks back just as the ball should be arriving, making it tough for Darby to react in time), toughness, contested catch ability, body control, and situational awareness (to stay in bounds). Tate only has good speed, but has elite quickness, and plays like this highlight his ability to get separation quickly when in tight coverage if the DB doesnt maintain constant eyes and leverage on Tate. McLaurin runs to the DBs outside shoulder, knowing that this will give him outside leverage when he eventually breaks out on his route. Its difficult to overthrow Alshon Jeffery, he can often jump over a DB to make the catch. They respect his deep speed and he takes advantage by breaking inside on a crossing route with nobody around him. Call 1-800-GAMBLER. He makes the catch (though its a body catch, not a hands catch) and shows great strength and body control breaking the initial tackle to run for several more yards. In a sport that is as physically demanding as football, one in which player injuries are common, the unit depth is as important a factor as the skill of the star players. Since joining Josh Allen and the Bills, Diggs leads the NFL with 2,953 receiving yards when aligned wide, and his 1,077 yards on hitch routes over that span are 370 more than the next-closest player (Tyler Lockett, 707). [6:10] Tate lines up outside and runs an out route, changing direction uphill immediately after the catch so quickly that Stroman whiffs on his tackle and Tate gets tons of YAC. He has NFL bloodlines as his father, Paul Richardson, played several years as an NFL wide receiver as well. -- Mike Band, Keegan Abdoo and Cole Jacobson contributed to this piece. These traits were evident in his game tape as well; he plays more fast than quick, and uses physicality or deep speed to get open more often than agility. JJ is also a good route runner and solid (though not aggressive) blocker. He makes a perfect hands catch, reaching out and securing the ball away from his body (and away from the DB), then tucking it under his outside arm to run. I think smart, physical CBs will give JJ trouble in the NFL as well, at least early in his development. Like Julio, Jeffery is tall, long-limbed, physical, fast, and a good route runner. In his college tape, he almost always corralled balls into his body after getting several feet of separation from DBs. [1:52] Slayton lines up bottom of screen on the outside. Cooper again lines up opposite Hughes, this time at the bottom of the screen. The Raiders have faced Cover 6 at an outlier rate this season (17 percent, the only team over 13 percent), as defenses "cloud" Adams' side of the field, drawing a safety farther away from the ball. You can see Reagors style with the ball in his hands is similar to a RB, with sharp cuts and good vision picking out running lanes to get 19 yards after the catch. This season, the division is up for grabs yet again. [7:50] Cooper again lines up top of screen opposite Mike Hughes. That good deep speed, with elite agility and acceleration shows up on tape as well. This shows how much the Cowboys trust Cooper to be a red zone weapon. Often at the college level, receivers see very little in-your-face physical man coverage, so watching what we can and analyzing it very closely is extremely important. This play shows again that McLaurin has more ways to win than just speed, and even against the best of CBs, he found a way to get open through physicality, smart positioning, and excellent route running and timing.
